Songs on a Summer Evening
This relaxing and attractive early evening programme of English, French and German song features many long-established favourites, including:
Die Forelle, Du bist die Ruh and Der Musensohn (Franz Schubert)
Six Songs from ‘A Shropshire Lad’ (George Butterworth)
Silent Noon (Ralph Vaughan Williams) and Sure on this shining night (Samuel Barber)
It hopes to find its place in a Malvern midsummer’s day which may have included a walk on the hills, or perhaps some time in the garden and a civilised afternoon tea, and yet conclude when the night is still young.
The beautifully restored venue, with its historical links to Elgar and George Bernard Shaw, boasts not only the recent acquisition of a fine Steinway grand piano but also well-appointed bar facilities for a well-timed interval.
John Barker and Helen Cawthorne have enjoyed a lifelong musical partnership dating back to student days at the Royal Academy of Music. They settled in Malvern within the last year and this is their first recital together in the town.
