SUMMARY:Playhouse Creatures
DESCRIPTION:Colwall Players present Playhouse Creatures by April De Angelis \nThe play is set in 1669 – a bawdy and troublesome time. Theatres had just re-opened after 17 years of suppression under the Puritans and for the first time English actresses are seen on stage. \nApril De Angelis has taken five famous figures – including Nell Gwynn – and given us a fascinating look at the precarious lot of actresses at the time. It’s a moving and often comic account of the true lives of restoration actresses\, with some earthy language! \nDue to the content of the play\, we are advising that it is suitable for age 14 and over only\, and in recognition of the possible interest to older students who may be studying the play as part of a drama course\, we are extending our concessionary rate to under 19s. \nShow times\nThursday 29 May 2025\, 7.30pm\nFriday 30 May 2025\, 7.30pm\nSaturday 31 May 2025\, 7.30pm \nTicket prices\nAdults: £13\nStudents: £8 (under 19s)\nTickets available from mid-April via Ticketsource

SUMMARY:Talk: Laura Knight's Theatre - Performance\, People and Place
DESCRIPTION:The Dame Laura Knight Society presents an illustrated talk by Professor Emeritus Claire Cochrane. \nLaura Knight’s extraordinarily capacious concept of theatre led to the creation of art that tried to capture not only the diversity of different forms of performance\, but also the working environments of where and how performance is made. In exploring examples of that diversity\, this talk will also focus on the key personalities who were instrumental in giving Knight access — in particular Sir Barry Jackson\, her friend for over five decades and the founder of the Birmingham Repertory Company and the Malvern Festival. \nTickets: £7 (members) / £10 (non-members) on the door \nRefreshments will be available at the talk.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Jennings
DESCRIPTION:Travel back in time to 1948 and join the Colwall Players as they recreate two of the original BBC radio plays by Anthony Buckeridge all about Jennings and Darbishire and their chums at Linbury Court Preparatory School. \nHow will new boy Jennings avoid a bashing up from Temple and how can Darbishire disguising himself as Edward G Robinson possibly help? How could a missing glove lead to a search party tramping across the Sussex Downs for someone who isn’t really missing? And does Mr Wilkins really hand out 150 million lines\nto any boy who hasn’t done his Latin prep? \nAll this and more will be revealed as we take you into our BBC recording studio and the wonderful world of Jennings. \nAs if that isn’t enough we’re going to give you a genuine school dinner to keep you going in between the two plays. It’ll be wizard muck\, we promise. (And don’t tell Mr Carter but we’ll even have a bar!) \nSo come along for an Evening with Jennings – frantic bishes and super-rare wheezes guaranteed. \nShow times\nThursday 20 February 2025\, 7.30pm\nFriday 21 February 2025\, 7.30pm\nSaturday 22 February 2025\, 7.30pm \nTickets: £15 (£10 for under 16s) – available from Ticketsource online or on 0333 666 3366

SUMMARY:A Fistful of Spookies
DESCRIPTION:Guaranteed to woo\, charm\, cheer and delight\, A Fistful of Spookies are professional singers and choir-leaders from across the UK who have all toured with festival hits The Spooky Men’s Chorale (Australia) and have enough voices to recreate the complete Spooky canon of achingly beautiful and wonderfully daft songs. Magnificent fun! \nFor newcomers to the Spooky phenomenon\, they have redefined the whole notion of male singing\, from anthems extolling the virtues of power tools and the joys of doing nothing (at all) to ancient Icelandic hymns\, Georgian work songs and a Ukrainian marching song\, as well as award-winning covers of Abba & Bowie\, mesmerising stylings of Dolly\, Tina\, Taylor and Queen and their defiant assertion that they are definitely not a men’s group. \nWith Adam Birkett\, Michael Carlyon\, Jamie Dawes-Hughes\, Adrian Mealing\, Philip Read\, Chris Samuel\, James Sills & Dom Stichbury. \nDoors open 7pm and concert starts at 7.30pm. \nAs of 16 November\, this event was sold out\, but it’s possible to join a waiting list by following the website link from this page.

SUMMARY:The Great Escaper (12A) (Flicks in the Sticks)
DESCRIPTION:Michael Caine and the late Glenda Jackson star in this inspirational retelling of a D-Day veteran’s remarkable exploit. In the summer of 2014 – the 70th anniversary of the D-Day Landings – Bernie Jordan made headlines after staging a “great escape” from his care home to join fellow war veterans on the beach in Normandy to commemorate their fallen comrades. With great chemistry between Caine and Jackson as Rene\, Jordan’s spirited wife of 60 years\, Oliver Parker’s (Swimming With Men\, Dad’s Army) warm\, bittersweet film salutes an adventure that captured the imagination of the world while exploring the lasting trauma of war. \nRunning time: 96 minutes (there will be an interval during this film) \nTickets: £5 – can be purchased on the door or you can book online in advance (ensure you select the correct time and location from the list)

SUMMARY:Jack and the Beanstalk
DESCRIPTION:The Colwall Players are well into rehearsal for their production of their panto Jack and the Beanstalk\, by Chris Jaeger\, which will be presented in the Colwall Village Hall from Thursday 15 February to Saturday 17 February 2024 at 7pm each evening\, with a matinee on Saturday at 2.30pm. \nWe’re aiming for the panto to be good\, old-fashioned family fun\, with all the traditional panto elements\, including lots of audience participation. Oh\, yes it will! \nWe don’t want to give too much away\, but we’ll have a giant and his horrible henchmen\, some very small guards\, Jack and Jill (the hero and heroine)\, Dame Trott and her other son\, Simple Simon\, as many as three fairies\, villagers and a growing beanstalk – and\, last but by no means least\, Daisy the Dancing Cow. We also have some highly colourful and spectacular scenery. \nIf you think that all this is too good to be true\, please come along and join in the fun and see for yourselves. \nShow times\nThursday 15 February 2024: 7pm\nFriday 16 February 2024: 7pm\nSaturday 17 February 2024: 2.30pm\nSaturday 17 February 2024: 7pm \nTickets\nAvailable from January 2024 from John Goodwin Estate Agents\, Colwall: 01684 540300

SUMMARY:Lunana - A Yak in the Classroom (PG) (Flicks in the Sticks)
DESCRIPTION:When a daydreaming but discontented young teacher is posted to Lunana\, a remote village high in the Himalayan mountains\, he is disheartened to find a simple yak herding community lacking basic amenities such as electricity or even a blackboard in its school classroom. But the enthusiasm of his young pupils and the unassuming warmth of the village folk lift his spirits and he must decide whether to return to the city before the gruelling winter sets in or remain in this strange and captivating land. \nThere will be an interval during this film. \nTickets (£5) can be booked in advance or purchased on the door.

SUMMARY:What's Love Got To Do With It? (12A) (Flicks in the Sticks)
DESCRIPTION:How do you find lasting love in today’s world? For documentary-maker and dating app addict Zoe\, swiping right has only delivered an endless stream of Mr. Wrongs\, to her eccentric mother Cath’s dismay. For Zoe’s childhood friend and neighbour Kaz\, the answer is to follow his parents’ example and opt for an arranged (or “assisted”) marriage to a bright and beautiful bride from Pakistan. As Zoe films his hopeful journey from London to Lahore to marry a stranger\, chosen by his parents\, she begins to wonder if she might have something to learn from a profoundly different approach to finding love. \nThere will be an interval during this film. \nTickets (£5) can be booked in advance or purchased on the door.
