SUMMARY:The Hildasholm Festival Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Musicians\nElisabeth Zeuthen Schneider – Violin\nToke Møldrup – Cello\nDaniele Rinaldo – Piano \nThis talented trio played at Hellens in summer 2025 and the organisers are delighted to welcome them again in April 2026. \nThe first half of the programme opens with a grand Bach piece: a ‘Triosonata’ where three voices -violin\, left and right hand of keyboard – tease and baffle. \nThe Debussy cello sonata was conceived as a tribute to the baroque masters Couperin and Rameau and has a beautiful intimate atmosphere \nThe Janácek ‘Pohádka’ (Fairytale) is inspired by an epic Russian poem and rounds off the first half of the concert on a fantastic note. \nAfter the break we set sail for the Beethoven trio: The name ‘Archduke’ refers to the dedication from Rudolph of Austria\, an amateur pianist\, a friend and piano student of Beethoven. The title shadows a bit for the wonderful inspired piece\, which happened to become the last piece that Beethoven performed in public. His deafness was at this point so grave that he could not hear himself – let alone the violin and cello. Despite the intense anguish Beethoven must have felt at this time\, he composes a piece of great beauty and optimism. The programme is a tour de force – all pieces playing up to the large\, wonderful Beethoven trio that is one of Beethoven’s greatest works. \nTickets: £20 (free to full-time students and carers) – available to book via the Hellens website

SUMMARY:Ghost Stories for Christmas by Edwyrdian Tales
DESCRIPTION:Join Edwyrdian Tales at Hellens Manor this festive season for an evening of haunting dark delights set during Christmastide. \nThis year our night of seasonal spirits includes terrors from classic authors of the age…MR James and Marjorie Bowen. \nIn ‘Number 13’\, a traveller discovers that his hotel room is not quite all that it seems and that the Number 13 is indeed unlucky for some… In ‘Kecksies’\, two ill-mannered young Lords impose on the hospitality of a tenant accused of witchcraft\, only to find that candles are lit for a funeral in the house. When they decide to play a cruel prank on those coming to pay their respects to the dead\, no one will escape the consequences untouched.… And finally in ‘Oh Whistle and I’ll Come to you my Lad’\, a storm is whistled up along a bleak stretch of coastline\, and a question howls upon the wind ‘Who is this who is coming…’ \nA one-man performance\, directed and haunted by Matthew Wood. \nDrinks will be available from the Haywain prior to the event. \n(Please note this performance is not suitable for children under 10 years of age.) \nTickets: £15 (adult) / £12 (child aged 10 – 16) – available via the Hellens website

SUMMARY:Tippett Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Hellens is thrilled to host this superb string quartet for a concert in the Great Barn. \nMusicians\nJohn Mills violin\nJeremy Isaac violin\nLydia Lowndes-Northcott viola\nBozidar Vukotic cello \nProgramme\nJohn Ireland String Quartet No 1 in D minor\nIan Venables String Quartet Op 32\nSchubert String Quartet in D minor D810 ‘Death and the Maiden’ \nIn this concert\, as part of the musical celebrations to mark the 70th birthday year of the highly acclaimed composer Ian Venables\, the outstanding Tippett Quartet will be performing Venables’ String Quartet\, a compact and most arresting work of melodic richness\, harmonic incident\, varied intensity and very real beauty. The programme will open with John Ireland’s youthful String Quartet\, where the influences of Beethoven and Brahms can be heard but also the early emergence of a new musical voice. In the second half of the concert\, the Tippett Quartet will play one of the perennial glories of chamber music\, Schubert’s ‘Death and the Maiden’ Quartet\, a work of riveting drama which also finds room for the most affecting poetic utterance. Ian Venables lives in Worcester and is a valued Trustee of Hellensmusic. \nThe Haywain bar and doors open 30 minutes prior to the performance. \nTickets: £20 (students and carers free) – available to book online via the Hellens website
