SUMMARY:London Handel Players
DESCRIPTION:The London Handel Players is a world-class ensemble bringing together leading period-instrument specialists in the field of baroque chamber music. For over two decades\, since making their debut at Handel’s parish church\, St. George’s in Hanover Square\, as part of the London Handel Festival in 2000\, they have delighted audiences around the world with their concerts and recordings. They perform regularly at Wigmore Hall and at many of the foremost festivals in the UK\, Europe and North America\, bringing audiences baroque chamber music and concertos and collaborating with some of the world’s leading singers. \nThe Players will be at Hellens for two consecutive days: Saturday 26 & Sunday 27 July 2025. \nThe first concert\, taking place on Saturday at 7.30pm\, is entitled ‘Father\, Godfather\, and Son’. Georg Philipp Telemann was Godfather to Johann Sebastian Bach’s fifth child\, Carl Philipp Emanuel\, who later became a prolific composer\, and this concert contains works by all three of these great masters with a variety of duos\, trios and quartets. \nThe second concert\, taking place on Sunday at 3pm\, has been given the title ‘Recreation’ and features works by Schmelzer\, Quantz\, Telemann\, Handel and Leclair (including Leclair’s Première Récréation de Musique). \nTickets\nTicket for each concert: £20\nCombined ticket for both concerts: £35\nStudents in full-time education and carers: Free \nHaywain Bar and doors open 30 minutes before performance.

DESCRIPTION:This immersive weekend at Hellens Manor offers the unique experience to hear all of Beethoven’s major chamber works with piano – violin sonatas\, cello sonatas and piano trios – in six concerts\, performed by three of Britain’s leading chamber players. \nAs well as being a great composer\, Beethoven was a brilliant pianist and performed all of his piano parts himself until deafness prevented him from playing in public for the final part of his career. Therefore\, through these works\, an insight is glimpsed into Beethoven’s unique and ground-breaking genius as it emerged through his chosen instrument and his own musicianship. SUMMARY:Basket Weaving Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Tutors Helen and Mollie\, who share a love of basketry and natural materials\, can’t wait to pass on their knowledge and passion to you in this immersive basketry retreat at Hellens. \nSpending one day each with Helen Munday (wondersofwillow.co.uk) and Mollie McMillen (molliemcmillen.co.uk)\, you will be supported in small groups to create two unique baskets\, in beautiful surroundings. \nWhether you’re new to weaving with willow or already have some experience of the craft\, you’ll be sure to enjoy creating your own woven handbag or shoulder bag with Helen\, who will spend a day guiding you through each stage of the process\, supporting you to create a basket you will be proud of. There will be a choice of colourful willow varieties and different materials for the straps\, allowing you to make a unique woven bag. A small additional charge will be made for the strap with a choice of leather\, webbing or cork available. \nThe day with Mollie will introduce you to the world of weaving with soft plant materials and tree barks. With plenty of scope for exploration and experimentation\, you will have a wonderful selection of materials to work with\, hand-harvested by Mollie from her garden and local landscape. Included will be discussion about sustainable harvesting techniques\, storage and preparation of materials\, giving you scope to start thinking about your own harvesting possibilities where you live\, for future basket making. You will be taught a number of different weaving and basketry skills\, such as twining\, plaiting and cordage making and be introduced to a variety of techniques to create bases and borders. SUMMARY:Olivier Messiaen's 'Quartet for the End of Time' & a New Work by Harold Noben
DESCRIPTION:Hellens extends a warm welcome to one of Belgium’s finest chamber groups\, the Roeland Hendrikx Ensemble\, for a candle-lit concert in the atmospheric Great Barn. \nQuartet for the End of Time is a deeply moving work and becomes all the more so when one considers the history of its composition. It was composed in 1941 when Messiaen was interned in a prisoner-of-war camp (having been captured the previous year by the Germans) and it was performed in the camp to around 400 fellow prisoners. The line-up of clarinet\, violin\, cello and piano was determined by the availability of players and instruments. The musical and spiritual programme of this brilliant work reaches beyond the limits of human time. Messiaen was a deeply religious man\, and his inspiration for writing it was a passage from the book of Revelation in the Bible. He sought to break with the conventions of musical time which characterised the music of his predecessors. In Quartet for the End of Time\, irregular pulse and asymmetrical rhythm are vital elements the composer employs to convey his utopian vision. \nThe concert will also include a new work by the Belgian composer Harold Noben\, which was commissioned by the Roeland Hendrikx Ensemble to be played alongside Messiaen’s unique composition. \nTickets: £18 for adults (students free) – available to book online or by phone from Hellens (01531 660504) or The Courtyard\, Hereford (01432 340555) (please note that the concert takes place only at Hellens).
