Short of cash in the 1630s, and at odds with Parliament, King Charles I introduced many imaginative methods of raising revenue. One of these was the King’s Thirds. The archaeology of the older Shire Ditch may be obvious; much less obvious are the hidden features of the King’s Thirds on the northern Malvern Hills. Discover where the banks and ditches were created in the 1630s and their history.

Exploring the King’s enclosures involves some steep sections.  The very steep sections have easier alternatives which will be indicated on the day so that the group reunites.  3 hours are allowed for this short 3-mile walk, with plenty of time for stops and explanations as we explore this fascinating area.
