Antiques

Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful” said William Morris.

A house is not a home until it is filled with items that we love. The beauty of being an individual is that everybody’s tastes are different. Some people prefer modern styles, others choose retro and antique pieces with more history. A few people may need a little assistance finding their own unique style with the help of an interior designer. There are a wide variety of businesses in The Malverns selling items and services that will help make our homes more homely. These smaller, local businesses know their stock inside out and can provide you with invaluable advice and offer items that will make your home as individual as you are.

Please see our list below. If you think we’ve missed somewhere, please let us know by email [email protected].

Malvern Hills Vintage is a huge timber barn in the village of Eastnor filled with an ever-changing eclectic mix of antique and retro treasures. Lighting, decorative furnishings and enamel signs are also for sale. This is also the place to come if you are after a beautiful classic car. A carefully chosen fleet of classic cars and motorcycles are available to buy. There is also a tearoom onsite.

Malvern’s oldest family run department store, Gordon Smith, was established in 1938. The various departments will enable you to kit out every room in your home. Gordon Smith is well-known locally for the huge choice of high-quality curtain fabrics and the curtain making service it offers, but the store also has cookshop, haberdashery, dining and soft furnishing departments.  On sale are high quality items from well-known, popular manufacturers of pots and pans, towels, kitchen gadgets, mugs and glasses, duvets and fabric.

Just above Great Malvern Priory sits Hunky Dorey, a fabulous little shop with a diverse collection of items from the past and present. Vintage mirrors, furniture, decorative items and gifts, and an assortment of high-quality clothing.

If you need some DIY tools, head to Haywards in Upton upon Severn which is a family-run firm trading since 1820.

Opened in 2016, Rhubarb Home, quickly established itself the place to go for quirky, stylish home décor. The 3 floors are filled with home accessories, furniture and lighting chosen by the owners, if they don’t love it, they don’t sell it! They also sell high quality tins of paint from an independent British manufacturer, ‘Little Greene’ paint. During the festive season the basement is transformed into a jaw-dropping, magical Santa’s grotto displaying Christmas decorations for the home and Christmas tree.

We all know how important it is to shop local and support independent establishments, even more so now with the pandemic. We often get a much better service from independent shops and they introduce us to alternative products, local produce and unusual gifts. Independent shops help keep our high streets looking interesting and different from every other town or city and help keep so many local people in jobs and ultimately help the local communities. There are many independent shops across The Malverns and they would be greatly missed if they disappeared, so please try to ‘Support Our Local Shops’.
