Handmade Arts and Crafts

The Malverns are renowned for inspiring creativity, which means we’ve got some great shops, galleries and studios selling incredible arts and crafts made locally.

The beauty of art and craft shops and galleries is the wide range of beautiful, unique items on display. Artists and craftspeople work in a huge variety of mediums and each has their own individual style; you are likely to find something to suit everyone’s tastes. When visiting local, smaller studios and shops you may even be able to meet the artists, have an opportunity to talk to them and gain more of an insight into their work and see them creating their pieces. This is something that isn’t possible in bigger galleries. Some local artists also create pieces that pay homage to their local area, these personal creations cannot be found anywhere else and are unique to The Malverns. Whether you have a blank wall that is calling out for a painting or are struggling to find that perfect present or just looking for some inspiration, the various art and craft shops and galleries around The Malverns are not to be missed.

When you have purchased your perfect painting or print, if it needs framing there are many framers across The Malverns who will offer their expert advice and skill to display the picture superbly.

Local artist Kate Rees has a studio in the heart of Upton upon Severn, Rankin and Rees, which she shares with an interior designer. Her acrylic and oil paintings are distinctive and extremely colourful and would brighten up any wall. Whether you love them or hate them, you certainly can’t miss them!

Studio Gallery has been based in Bridge House, Waterside for nearly twenty years. Displaying paintings by Janice and Gerald Savine N.D.D., G.R.A. Although other subjects are available, Gerald is known for his marine and railway paintings, some of which are available as limited edition prints, greetings cards and puzzles. Janice is known for her animal, landscape and flower paintings. Some of these are available as prints and greetings cards.

Malvern Hills Gallery of Arts and Crafts can be found on Belle Vue Terrace in the centre of Great Malvern. This cooperative gallery features a vast array of original art and handmade craft items produced by around 40 members of the Malvern Hills Arts and Crafts Guild. Items for sale include greetings cards, jewellery, wooden crafts, soft toys, metal work, clocks and paintings.

Another art gallery in the heart of Great Malvern is The Original Artwork Store. The owner, Alan Brown, an oil painting restorer, is passionate about fine art and has created a small gallery of original artwork. The gallery sells a range of fine art from Victorian to contemporary pieces, in a variety of mediums: oil, watercolours, mixed media and acrylic. Also, on offer are painting restoration and picture framing.

Why not enjoy a cup of tea and a slice of cake while perusing the art filled walls at The Spotty Dog Tearoom and Gallery in Tenbury Wells? On display is a wide selection of artwork and prints by local and international artists. Other handmade items available to purchase are soft home furnishings, jewellery, textiles and pottery.

You can also head on out into the countryside where you can explore and browse three rural shopping centres, where you can purchase Christmas presents from a number of arts and crafts studios, including Mill Farm Country Retail at Stanford Bridge in the Teme Valley, The Fold at Bransford and Hop Pocket Craft Centre at Bishops Froome.

We all know how important it is to shop local and support independent establishments, even more so now with the pandemic. We often get a much better service from independent shops and they introduce us to alternative products, local produce and unusual gifts. Independent shops help keep our high streets looking interesting and different from every other town or city and help keep so many local people in jobs and ultimately help the local communities. There are many independent shops across The Malverns and they would be greatly missed if they disappeared, so please try to ‘Support Our Local Shops’.
