Event Description

Written to celebrate the coronation of King George II, and performed at every subsequent coronation, Zadok the Priest and The King Shall Rejoice have made their mark on music history as some of the most powerful and evocative works to have been composed for such an occasion.

Comprising eighteen short movements for chorus and soloists, the Te Deum is one of Handel’s most splendid works, written to mark King George II’s triumphant return from the Battle of Dettingen in 1743. The concert also features the famous Fireworks Music, written in 1749 to accompany the royal celebrations for the ending of the War of the Austrian succession.
