Event Description

This October, Birmingham-based painter Shaun Morris presents ‘The Cut’, an exhibition of a selection of his paintings of Birmingham and his native Black Country’s canals completed over the last 12 years. The region is well-known for its extensive canal network, and these paintings bring them to life in unusual and imaginative ways which lean into the traditions of landscape painting with a variety of contemporary approaches. The large paintings, rich in colour and atmosphere, evoke a sense of the history of the canals and their role in the industrial revolution, but also depict the canals as they cut through the ruins of the contemporary post-industrial landscape, the so-called edgelands and the ‘geography of nowhere’. Here they hide and divide a landscape unseen beneath the colossal motorways of the M5 and M6 overhead that have replaced their use. In other paintings the canals are depicted at night in bold, almost entirely abstract canvasses that exude a unique air of dislocation and mystery. All welcome.
