Event Description

On a Role Theatre Company presents Emmeline Pankhurst – Angel or Anarchist?, written by Chris Jaeger and starring Liz Grand

Emmeline Pankhurst is one of the most influential and well-known British women ever to have lived. She fought tirelessly to win the vote for women. She was imprisoned on a number of occasions and frequently went on hunger strike. Having failed to make any impression on the male electorate and parliamentarians for nearly three decades, she became a strong proponent of Direct Action. The suffragettes threw stones at politicians, set fire to letter boxes, torched buildings, chained themselves to railings, and threw themselves under horses.

Although they were eventually successful, many suffragettes suffered terribly during the campaign. Emmeline had her critics. Many people were of the opinion that, had the suffragettes been less confrontational, the franchise would have been extended to women much earlier. They regarded Emmeline as someone who had hindered the fight rather than helped it. But what was the truth?

This production stars Liz Grand (previous shows The Second Best Bed, Where Is Mrs, Christie?, Mrs. Churchill – My Life With Winston and The Secret Life of Enid Blyton), who brilliantly portrays this complex, courageous and visionary woman.
