Event Description

A group of bored soldiers resolve to put the loyalty of the wives they have left behind at home to the test, setting in motion a cruel and reckless series of events that have shattering ramifications.

Benjamin Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia was written in the aftermath of the World War Two and reflects a world struggling to remake itself after unimaginable suffering and destruction. In today’s world, it is still a brutally relevant and disturbing exploration of the abuse of power, shot through with glimmers of hope for a better world. Characterised by a beautiful, sparse score for just thirteen players, the opera shows beauty and lyricism wrestling with the forces of darkness.

Performed in English with English surtitles.

This performance contains depictions of physical violence, suicide and references to sexual violence.
