Reduce the cost of the summer holidays by getting the kids outdoors and closer to nature across The Malverns. There’s lots of fun to be had exploring the countryside and we’ve come up with a few suggestions.

Malvern Hills Bench

Pack a picnic and bundle out into nature for the day. The Malvern Hills has numerous picturesque spots for picnicking, enjoying the views and soaking up the wonderful animal and plant life. The impressive tiered hills at the British Camp Iron Age Hill Fort create the perfect space for energetic youngsters to play make believe, and use the hills as a natural playground. Long, happy days as a family can also be spent wandering the Teme ValleyUpton Ham Site of Scientific Special Interest (SSSI)St. Wulstans Nature Reserve,  and Worcestershire Wildlife Sites.

Free Town Centre Children’s Trails

Take a town centre trail in Great Malvern, Tenbury Wells, Upton upon Severn on on the Malvern Hills. Suitable for youngsters from 4 years the trails take you on a journey around the town centres uncovering interesting facts along the way.

Teme Valley Walking and Cycling Trails

Malvern Hills District Council’s Economic Development team have worked in partnership with staff and students from the Graphic Design department of Worcester University to design and produce a new trail guide to promote walking, cycling and a driving tour of the Teme Valley. 

The guide consists of six walks and six cycle rides, all aimed at families. The rides and walks are detailed in individual ‘route maps’ available below. The routes have been designed to compliment O/S Explorer Maps.

The Route Maps are also available as hard copies from local Tourist Information Centres.

Are you a family of car lovers? The cafe and giftshop at the Morgan Experience Centre is free to enter and decorated with plenty of their historic cars. Have a wander down to Malvern Link, take in the cars and maybe pop by Victoria Park for a picnic and some playtime.

Orchard Play Ground at Clive’s Fruit Farm

Walk or cycle down to Clive’s Fruit Farm from the riverside town of Upton upon Severn for walks through the orchards and meet the farm animals.

Pick up a book or game at Great Malvern Library

Library’s aren’t just old buildings with books , there’s loads of things you can borrow as well as art exhibitions and free activities.

Nature Trails at The Fold

Let the little ones connect with the environment on the nature trails at The Fold. There’s so much to discover on the three trails: Lake, Railway and River, all about a mile long so perfect for little legs. The Lake Trail comes in at the shortest at 3/4 of a mile and takes you around the tranquil Tank Lake area which is home to all manner of birds and wildflowers. The Railway Trail follows the tree-lined route of the old Worcester to Leominster line and provides a home for plenty of wildlife to spot. The River Trail snakes along the banks of the River Teme with views across the surrounding countryside and makes a perfect, secluded spot for a picnic.

Geocaching

Heard of Geocaching? Youngsters (and grown-ups!) with lots of energy will enjoy this real life treasure hunt where containers, or “caches”, are hidden and their exact co-ordinates posted online. Find the container, sign the logbook and see if anything exciting has been left inside. There are hundreds of cashes hidden across The Malvern Hills and around Upton upon Severn so many happy hours can be spent hunting and roaming the beautiful countryside.

Visit The Tudor House Museum and take a stroll along the River Severn

Museum of Upton’s Past and Present with an award winning garden too. It’s free to enter and they have plenty of activities and events for little historians. Located centrally in Upton upon Severn you can take a stroll along the riverside through the beautiful Upton Ham meadows.

Priory Park Play Area wooden play pods

Priory Park – Great Malvern

Visit the new adventure playground in Priory Park. The fun space is made up of multiple areas suitable for different ages and includes hobbit houses, a daring robe bridge, a dizzying basket swing and a giant butterfly to befriend. There is hours of outdoor fun and exercise to be had.

The Burgage – Tenbury Wells

The Burgage is a beautiful recreation area with fields, children’s play area, tennis courts, bowling green and memorial garden. The word ‘burgage’ is derived from the medieval term for enclosed fields outside of a town.

Upton upon Severn Play Area

Head to the riverside town Upton upon Severn and visit New Street Play Area. You will find an enclosed under 12’s area, skate park and multi-use games area where you can play tennis, football, basketball and netball.
