The Glass Jar was opened in November 2021 by local artist Sarah Nicol. Sarah’s history is as a designer and maker and the shop contains her glorious tableware and textiles. Along with supporting other local artisans, the shop is a joy to wander through, with a beautifully curated gallery feel.
However, once in this lovely shop, a bigger picture emerges. Sarah’s passion for leading a sustainable life and encouraging others to do the same, shines through. You will find environmentally friendly household cleaning goods, ethically sourced personal care items, a larder full of vegan and gluten free store cupboard ingredients, and an extensive range of delicious chocolate! Along with a full range of Pukka teas, you should never go thirsty…but just in case, there is the organic off licence! Here you will find wines and champagne from Spain, France and Italy along with a carefully curated collection of climate positive spirits.
The overall ethos for the shop certainly lives up to the conviction of the famous designer William Morris, who said: ‘Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.’ From The Glass Jar certainly delivers on that! All the water bottles and lunchboxes are tactile yet practical and completely eliminate the need for plastic alternatives. There are gifts aplenty, from handmade soaps and candles to leatherware and willow baskets – all locally sourced. Latest additions include lovely little chopping boards salvaged by a local woodworker from a fallen ash tree.
