Dr. Petr Somol, AI Research Director at General Digital (parent company of Norton, Avira, Avast and AVG), British Computer Society

Petr focuses on building advanced AI solutions to protect consumers from a wide spectrum of digital threats including viruses, malware, scams, fraud and online manipulation.

He earned his PhD from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Charles University in Prague. Between 2000 and 2002, he held a research associate position at the University of Cambridge and was a frequent visitor to Malvern. For 16 years he worked as a scientist in the field of pattern recognition at the Institute of Information Theory and Automation, part of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Since 2013 he has led AI research teams focused on developing solutions for both enterprise and consumer markets.

Outside of his professional work, Petr has a strong interest in world history, visual arts and typography, which inform his appreciation for clarity, structure and design – whether in data or in print.
